India's crude oil import dependency ratio is ~90%. Nat gas import dependency is ~50% (mostly LNG). That's percentages - in absolute figures, India is the 3rd largest oil consumer after the US and China. / When you have volumes and ratios like that, there is no strategic autonomy, and it has nothing to do with Modi vs. any other party/PM. It's just brutal numbers.

There’s a reason Alan Furst’s novel was titled “Blood of Victory” - it’s a play on words. Oil is sometimes called “blood of the earth”. You can survive if someone chops off your arm, but not if someone shuts down your circulatory system.

There's lots of good, smart, patriotic folks in India, all trying to do the right thing, and working towards growing her comprehensive national power over the long run. And the road is going to be hard and long (long as in minimum 100 years) - some real hard sledding.

As Jack Nicholson so famously said in that great movie, The Departed, "No one gives it to you. You have to take it."
